A Little Taste of Fall

Math

We finished our assessments and started our first lessons this week. We found out why other homeschool families like CTC math. The assessments test us for ALL of the things we should've learned in our previous grade. That way, mom can look at our test scores and assign us the lessons we need to do to fill in any gaps that we have in our learning. Finally, we can get back on track!

Language Arts
This week we read A Midsummer Night's Dream from our Shakespeare book. This story was very funny and smart. There were 4 love-tangled people- Lysander and Hermia, who love each other, Demetrius, who wants Hermia, and Helena, who wants Demetrius. One day they all go into the woods. Lysander and Hermia plan to fly away so that Hermia doesn't have to marry Demetrius. Demetrius plans to kill Lysander and win Hermia over. Helena follows Demetrius and tries hopelessly to get Demetrius to love her. But Forest King, Oberon, and his henchman Puck have different plans!

For Brave Writer, I wrote this week's passage, but I misspelled most of the words and left out commas, apostrophes, periods, and quotation marks. Then I pretended to be the teacher and went over it with a red pen and fixed my imaginary student's writing. As you can see, there is more red pen than pencil on the paper. 😉 It was quite fun!

Science
Spa Chemistry (Kaylee):

This week I made some pumpkin-pie scented bath bombs!

For this project, I got out my Bath Bomb making kit. It had shrink wrap supplies, measuring spoons, and 3 different sizes of spherical molds. I made 2 large bath bombs, 1 middle-sized, and 1 small bath bomb.

The first had too much pumpkin pie spice on top, the third got wet and sank down to the paper towel, the fourth crumbled, but the second was pretty awesome! Now I have a better idea of what to do for next time!

Elementary Science (Landen):

I watched some science videos. I learned about the water cycle and how to make a cloud. You fill a pressurized bottle with some water, then pump air into it with a bike or ball pump. You shake the bottle very well and then quickly unscrew the lid. By shaking and then quickly taking the pressure away (by removing the lid), it creates a cloud that wafts out of the bottle. My favorite video was when they took a huge, metal can and boiled water in it, then put it in some ice and poured even more ice onto the top of it. By the sudden change in temperature, the can crushed. The scientists had to wear earmuffs- it was so loud!!

Technology
Photography (Kaylee):

I continued my online class on Creative Live. I learned about the sensor in a camera and saw a chart about a Photographer's Life.

This chart is found directly from Creative Live, the "Fundamentals of Photography" class. It was very funny to look at and you might want to spend a couple minutes looking at the different lines: "knowledge", "quality of photos", and "how good you think you are".

Digital Art (Landen):

Dad and I got my Artist 12 set up and we downloaded the software that we needed. Finally!!!

I watched the instruction videos and practiced using the pen and screen. My favorite part was animating the characters.

Elective
Culinary Arts (Kaylee): This week I said goodbye to Korean food and hello to Fall Favorites!

My first recipe is some yummy apple harvest bread!

Unlike the Hotteoks from last week, this bread is a "quick bread", meaning the dough doesn't have to rise.

I had to move quickly once I chopped the apples, or else they would turn brown!

PE (Landen):

This week our family went to the park.

We played basketball, ran around a pathway, rode wiggle cars, and raced up and down a playground. I practiced dribbling and shooting hoops because I signed up for Junior Jazz.

Arts and Crafts (Emberly):

This week I made a paper and yarn apple. I chose yellow because that is my favorite kind of apple.

I punched holes in a paper plate and strung yarn around the edges like a big, yellow spiderweb!

Finally, I glued a leaf and a stem onto the top of the apple.

  1. So fun that the weather is letting all y'all visit the park! Landen signed up for Junior Jazz. That's awesome! Also, I'm glad you got Artist 12 up and running now. I'll have to see you work on it sometime.
Apple bread...yum. I had a caramel apple the other day. I love this time of year cause of baking with pumpkin and the wonderful smells of the spices like cinnamon and cloves. Did your bread taste delish, Kaylee? Have you used a bath bomb? We learn by trying and learning and trying and learning, right?
I had a Shakespeare reading class in high school and here you are reading him now. We read Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet (like you did), and Merchant of Venice. I liked how my teacher could explain parts I didn't quite understand.
The green line on the photography chart is fun. Kind of a huge drop there.😁 I did enjoy looking at it!
Tell Emberly her apple is cool. She did a good job making it!
Grandpa and I went to the Pocatello Temple open house yesterday. We went with a couple of our missionary friends. The temple is beautiful! I'm so glad we have temples...families are forever!
    Keep on learning!
    💜,
    Grandma Susan
