Peppermint Bath Salts and Turkeys

Math:
We continued our math lessons. I (Kaylee) am learning about estimating the answer of multiplication and division problems by rounding off. I (Landen) am learning about pyramid nets and graphs.

Language Arts:
We read more of our book, Ancestor Approved, and did our copywork. Emberly did copywork with us!

Science:
Spa Chemistry (Kaylee):
This week I made some peppermint-scented pink and white bath bombs.

Aquarium Field Trip

Language Arts:
We continued reading Ancestor Approved.

Science:
This week we went on a field trip to the Loveland Living Aquarium. Tuesday was ZAP day and tickets were $2!!
Shiloh enjoyed looking at all of the fish.

Fishy fact: desert tortoises sometimes share their underground dens with insects, tarantulas, and even rattlesnakes!

We saw a couple of fish in one exhibit that were at least 1 yard long and about 6 inches wide! They were huge!

We also saw a couple of otters swim by.
They were bigger than we expected!

Fun Fact: when a frog swallows, it pulls it's eyes down into the roof of it's mouth. The eyes help slide the squishy food down their throat. Eww!

We also loved climbing on the killer whale slides near one exhibit!

A moon jellyfish!

Fun fact: jellyfish aren't fish- they are invertebrate! Also, most jellyfish live less than one year. My (Kaylee) favorite jellyfish is the box jellyfish, which is the Most Deadly animal in the world! It's sting can kill a human in under 2 minutes! It also ranked the Most Dangerous Animal in the 72 dangerous animals show.

We ate a snack at the aquarium cafeteria- chips and a fruit cup!

We also learned about how the aquarium workers grow the lettuce for the cafeteria salads and serve it just a few feet away from where if first grew!

Finally, we visited the shark exhibit. There were all sorts of fish, a turtle, a giant stingray, and a whole lot of sharks!

The exhibit was dome-shaped, so we could watch the sharks swim right over our heads!

The stingray was my (Kaylee) favorite part. We also enjoyed the touch pools. I touched a sleeping shark and an anemone and Landen touched a sea urchin and a starfish!

It was a very fun and educational day!

Technology:
Digital Photography (Kaylee):
I learned about photography clichés and how some people say, "no more photos of blurred water and babies and pets and messy faces and..." and so on. I also watched another video on Creative Live. It was a quiz about assessing a photograph. The teacher showed a photo and then asked what ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and lens type he used. Then he showed the brightness or darkness meter of the photo and asked the class what setting to change to bring the meter down to normal brightness.

(The pictures below are copied directly from Creative Live and are used for educational purposes only.)

Here, the aperture is f/11, the shutter speed is 125, and the ISO is 100. But the photo is way too dark.

In order to brighten it up, you change the shutter speed to 4.

Digital Art (Landen):
I watched a tutorial animation on scratch about how to draw a character on scratch and then I drew my own character. See it here. And here is Kaylee's drawing.

Elective:
Culinary Arts (Kaylee):
This month in Raddish is... Thanksgivings Twists. This week I made Turkey Burgers topped with cranberry mayo and crispy onions.

I used ground turkey and mixed in Worcestershire sauce, fresh sage, thyme, garlic and salt.

The tool that was included this month was a flipper to flip the patties. I cooked them on the stove, carefully timing them to insure they were cooked. I topped them with provolone cheese.

As you can see.. there is a bun, lettuce, crispy onions, provolone cheese, a turkey burger, some cranberry mayo (cranberry sauce and mayo whisked together) and the bottom bun!

P.E. (Landen):
I had my second game. We had a couple of boys missing which meant that we had more playing time. It was a lot of work! We lost at 20-14 We fought hard and tried our best!

This week we also got a basketball hoop! I am excited to practice a lot more for this upcoming week's game.

It was so fun to have the support of both my Grandmas and one of my Grandpas.

Arts and Crafts (Emberly):

We made a family gratitude tree and leaves. Whenever we think of something we are grateful for we write it down on a leaf.

Also, I made a rainbow-colored paper chain with Kaylee's help. She wrote gratitude prompts on each one. Every day, I rip a paper slip off the chain and read the prompt. Then I answer the question.

Lip Balm and Junior Jazz

Language Arts:
We started our new book for November... Ancestor Approved!

It is similar to our last book, Before The Ever After. Instead of the book being a collection of poems, it's a collection of short stories about the Cree culture.

Science:
Spa Chemistry (Kaylee):
This week I made a lip balm container out of bottle lids, then made my own yummy lip balm!

It was really easy and fun to make the container as well as the lip balm. You need two bottles, scissors, glue, and stickers or markers to decorate! If you are interested, you can find the instructions here. The container really unscrews!

Once the glue dried, I made a Vaseline-free mint chocolate lip balm! It uses peppermint oil and cocoa powder. It smells super good both in the container and on my lips! It is super hydrating, perfect for the cold season.

Elementary Science (Landen):
This week I experimented with sensory sand and water sand! The sensory sand clumps together when squeezed, but becomes soft when let go. The water sand was especially cool. It came with a spoon. When it was in the water, it clumped together. When you collected some on the spoon and brought it out of the water, it became powder!

I enjoyed making sand castles with the sensory sand!

Technology:
Digital Photography (Kaylee):
I learned about the manual modes on a camera- MASP. "P" stands for program, where the camera automatically chooses what apertures and shutter speeds you use, but you do the rest of the settings. "S" stands for shutter priority, where you choose the shutter speeds but the camera chooses the aperture you use. "A" stands for aperture priority, where the aperture is the manual control and the shutter speed is automatic.  This is my teacher on Creative Live, John Greengo's favorite. There is one common factor is the P,S, and A modes: the exposure mode is automatic. Finally, there is "M", which stands for manual, where you control both shutter speed and aperture. At first it's a bit confusing, but for me it got interesting!

Digital Art (Landen):
This week I made a catch game on Scratch. Kaylee helped me. You can find it here.

Culinary Arts (Kaylee):
WHOOSH! What's that? Where am I? Oh, look. Here's a calendar. WHAT?? It says August 2021!! We've been transported back in time! Oh, well. Since we're here...
We're revisiting the past and making Korean Mandu dumplings!

I'd saved my dumplings recipe and this week, I've gotten it out again and made some more dumplings!

I realized from last time that we needed more filling, so I added some more to each dumpling.

They still stuck together and popped open, but they were still good! Oh, look! There's another bite! How yummy! *You reach for it.* Ahh! WHOOOSH! Oh, no. It's November 2021 again. No more dumplings. 🙁

P.E. (Landen):
It's basketball season, and this year I've joined Junior Jazz!

We had our first game this week. We tied 16-16. It was fun, but also very hot and tiring! Fun fact: on the real Jazz team, number 23 (which is also my number) is Royce O' Neale. My dad picked my jersey number because it was Michael Jordan's number. For fun, we also watched a basketball game on TV to show me how to defend, pass, shoot, and score!

Arts and Crafts (Emberly):
This week I painted a tree and glued some leaves on it to look like how the leaves change color in fall!

Landen did it with me and we had so much fun!

It's The End... It's Over. 2022-2023 Goodbye!

Pre-Algebra: This week I completed my Final Mr. D. Math lesson and my Semester II test!! I completed a survey and gave them some feedback. I...
