Muscles and Making Bias Tape

Science: The Muscular System!

What is cool about the muscular system? We have been asking this question this week. What I really wanted to know was.. How do you strengthen a muscle??

You strengthen a muscle by using it often and by lifting weights. An unused muscle does no good and actually gets weaker.

In addition to the Mix It (baking) club, we are also in a running club. We are setting goals and encouraging each other to run. Running gives us a great opportunity to strengthen our muscles!

Our family went on the treadmill this week and we learned that it is important to not only stretch our muscles before running but also warm them up first. We did the warming up steps that mom showed us. Then we did the stretching exercises that dad showed us. After running I did some cool down exercise with mom.

We also colored, cut and glued our muscles onto our bodies.

Tech:

Doodle Crate (Kaylee): I got into Canvas and submitted my "test." It was really a yes or no question, did you complete part one, two, and three on your innovation journal? I completed it and then submitted yes.

Tinker Crate (Landen): There was one more thing I could do with my crate. I disconnected some of my wires and was able to get the crystal to work with a quarter!

Elective:

Arts and Crafts (Kaylee):
I worked on my pajama pants and this week I learned how to make continuous bias tape out of a square of fabric.

Here it is!

We bought a bias tape maker set that included all of the bias tape makers, a sewing machine foot that helps to sew the tape on, and a tool to push the fabric strip through the tape makers.

It works and it is PRETTY!!!

Building Machines (Landen):
My assignment this week was to build a wheel barrel and use the weight that was included in the set.

Bonus Highlight: We also read "The Dragon with a Chocolate Heart" and participated in our reading club called the Bookworms.

I also submitted a poem for a Christmas Card contest for the Language Arts program I am doing. The winner will have their poem printed into cards that will go to patients who will be in the hospital over the holidays. I titled it: "Covid-19 Brings Gloom, But Let Joy Resume!"

  1. Another great week of learning, I see. I like how you guys have an outline of your bodies to use with your body systems. Probably helps to see how they work together and where organs, etc belong.
I bet you like the different clubs you participate in.
I have wondered how a bias tape maker works. I think I should get me one plus a foot, since they work so well. Sewing on bias tape has always been frustrating for me.
Landen, so many great Lego vehicles and using a quarter to conduct electricity...cool!
Kaylee, I hope your poem gets put on a card! Especially at this time of year, I look for joy. Jesus is our source of joy.
I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. I'm looking forward to your next post. Keep on running!
