Week of Jan 30- Feb 3 LL #25

This week we also went on a Davinci field trip to the Clark Planetarium! Read about it here.

Pre-Algebra:
This week I started Chapter 7 for Mr. D. Math! I learned about graphing algebra equations on a number line. You solve the equations, find X, and then graph it. It uses the inequality signs <, >, ≤, and .

Creative Writing:
This week we each filled out a worksheet about our family. We will work on writing a song about our family later. We talked about different topics and how the right music and title set the mood for the song.

Social Studies:
This week I learned about barbarians. Attila the Hun, a strong and powerful leader, led the Huns to attack Rome. The emperor arranged for his sister Honoria to marry a weak, ugly man, and threatened to throw her in jail if she refused. Honoria sent a letter to Attila and told him that if he rescued her, she would marry him. Attila sent a message to the emperor and told him he was engaged to Honoria and he wanted half of the empire as a wedding present. Attila came to claim the treasures, and the emperor eventually paid him to leave. He also promised to send money to Attila each year, if only he would leave his empire alone.

Attila agreed and left, planning to come back and claim his wife. But before he could return, he suddenly died. The cause of death? A nosebleed.

End of story. After I got over my frustration, I did a cool flashcard game to help me memorize all of the United States.

The holder has the capital, the abbreviation, the name's letter scrambled up, and the location of the state. You can cover up the capital, abbreviation, or the location with the flaps if you want to practice memorizing the state with say, only the abbreviation.

You can also cover the scrambled up letters with your finger if you want to memorize without them. There is a slider that you can move to reveal the answer.

My review? It is fantastic, and probably the best way to learn all the states, and the only thing I don't like is the fact that it doesn't have a slider to cover the scrambled up letters. Add that so you don't have to use your finger, and it's perfect.

Tech (Exploring Technology):
This week I learned about different types of landforms. Cliffs, peninsulas, islands, coasts, waterfalls, and others. I must warn you- I used a night vision potion for some of these, since I was working through the night, and you'll see blue swirls that indicate I am using the effects of a potion. I tried to time the screenshots right, but... that didn't go well.

Here I wrote about what I learned, and it's kind of an I Spy kind of thing. Can you find the 4 different landforms I built around here?

A peninsula is a strip of land that is covered on 3 sides by water, and connected to other land on the 4th side.

A coast is where land meets water.

An island is a piece of land that is covered on all 4 sides by water. I made a cute house out of sandstone and wood on my island.

I love my house!!!!! ;) It was inspired by a Minecraft book I have. It was built on a hill with a very similar staircase, but it was much, MUCH bigger and cooler. I didn't have time for that.

You can see a night vision potion in my hand.

And for this one, it is still an island, only it was created by a volcano erupting, and the lava cooling into a piece of land. Okay, not technically, since there are no natural volcanoes in Minecraft, but volcanos form many of the islands on Earth.

Elective (Writing for Publication):
This week we started working on our Semester II project! We talked about different types of introductions. I think I am going to do a paper about San Diego.

We are basically done with the Nubia magazine, except for if we want to add a few last minute changes. I am going to add what we learned about testing the recipes we found, and then I am done. It will go through the art department or something and get turned into a real magazine!
