Week of Oct 17-21 LL #11

Pre-Algebra:

This week I did a lesson where I had to figure out what was being done to the variable (x) and do the opposite. I learned about addition and subtraction and multiplication and division.

Creative Writing:
This week I filled out a worksheet about one of my main characters in the book I'm writing. We talked about the questions on the worksheet. This week there were 5 more teens in the class! When I walked in, instead of there being 4 other classmates, the table was crowded. Wow. It was quite a surprise.

Social Studies:
This week I learned about the Phoenicians and the Return of the Assyrians. The Phoenicians were really cool traders. They blew glass, made purple dye from snails, and cut down trees, boated them across rivers, and sold them. The Assyrians were a really powerful empire, but the Babylonians had captured them. The Assyrians were finally able to rebel, and they overthrew Babylon. They were once again really powerful. They conquered every city or town they came by, up and down the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. They were the most powerful empire. But the leader was afraid no one would remember him, and since he liked to read, he collected thousands of stone tablets and made the world's first library. It worked- we remember him as the book collector.

This week I bound a book and wrote in it.

I found images of Minecraft mobs and a sunset and combined them in Kapwing, a cool video and photo editing site. I also found out something super annoying- the Premium Membership allows you to export your photos, and you can't export them without it. I'm not paying for Premium, so... I screenshotted it, used a different editing site to crop it so there was just my picture, e-mailed it to the computer (because I was doing this on my tablet), printed it off, and glued it to the cover of my book. A lot of work, a lot, a lot, a lot, a LOT, but it was worth it.

Tech (Exploring Technology):
This week I learned about wildfires! Wildfires can be created by lightning or a campfire gone out of control. This week's Minecraft Activity was to build a firefighting truck or plane. I decided to build it over a Taiga Forest- lots of tall trees. Landen wanted me to build a plane, and since there wasn't much room on the ground for a truck, I agreed.

Here is my burning forest!

Inside the plane, there's some firemen gear, water buckets, diamond axes, and even... fireproof potions.

And here's my plane!

Seems a bit cheating, you say? Well, since I didn't want to burn down the whole forest so people couldn't see my work (only a barren landscape), I didn't turn on the "fire spreads" setting in this part. This way, the fire doesn't actually burn anything. Still seem super easy for the firemen? I replaced some of the leaves and wood with netherrack, a block that burns forever when lit. Finally, I put campfires with hay under it to make the smoke float high. (Without the hay it would float half as high.)

Something cool I noticed- the potions glow in the dark! Cool, huh?

Elective (Writing for Publication):
This week I did not go to my class, but I put together a First Draft of my Nubian Food Traditions report. It is really cool! I used text boxes and shapes to add some extra info and combined all my research really well, I think. :) I will give it to my teacher next class.
