This week I learned about Order of Operations. I solved problems like 5((8 - 3) * (6-2)). The answer is 100. Next, I opened up an Excel spreadsheet and learned how to input problems so a computer understands it. The same problem would be written as " = 5 * ((8-3) * (6-2)) ". After the Excel stuff, I did my Chapter 1 test. I got a B- on it.
Creative Writing:
This week I learned about character archetypes in my Creative Writing class. Character archetypes are characters that are used so often they're boring. Such as: the hero, the lover, the magician, the sage, the outlaw, the explorer, the innocent child, the ruler, the caregiver, the everyman, and the jester. (I just listed everything on the list on accident!) We also did an activity where we observed the people in the class (or yourself). One of my classmates wrote this about me: glances up a lot, plays with hair, writes fast. I wrote about people's clothes, listed common fidgeting, and listed what fidgeting I was seeing in the class.
Our homework was to take two common archetypes that normally don't go together, and combine them to make cool characters. One person was going to do an innocent child sage. I think I'm going to do a master manipulator- innocent child!
Social Studies:
This week I learned about the Jewish People and Joseph of Egypt. I learned that there were wars in the city of Ur, so the Jews moved to Haran. But God told them to move to Canaan, so they did. There, Joseph was sold as a slave to Egypt. I copied the map it gave me and tracked the path from Ur to Egypt. It was really interesting to see where they moved around!
Exploring Technology:
This week I started my Minecraft Class! I took the orientation guide and learned how to make "claims" so that I can work on my projects and no one can come and destroy them, how to set a "home warp" to teleport myself to my different projects, and how to submit my builds to my teacher. It was so much fun. I can't wait to start my lessons!
Elective (Writing For Publication):
This week we narrowed it down what columns we were going to do for our magazine. I chose to do a How to make kabed (a Nubian bread) paper. I also chose to do an essay about the Importance of Cataracts, and a paper about Nubian Food. I'm really excited for this! Finally, I learned that the Wikipedia, formerly known as a horrible site where everyone can add things and hardly anything is true, is actually a pretty good resource. Several people go through everything on the website and make sure it is all true. They are pretty harsh, my teacher says. So, don't add anything wrong! ;)
Our homework was to research ideas. I looked for a kabed recipe, but since it's so old, I couldn't find any. I also researched facts about Cataracts and made a pretty good outline of what I want it to look like.
Bonus (Busy Bee Classes):
This week I took my first Busy Bee classes! I have a cooking class, and a sewing class taught by mom! I made cornbread and honey butter for my cooking class, then brought home the recipe. It is soo good! I hope I can make it again sometime. For my sewing class we got socks and began to make cute dolls out of them! Mine is going to be purple and pink. I love Busy Bee. It is so much fun!
Here's the recipe, if you want it. If you can't read it that well, here is the ingredient list for the cornbread:
1/2 cup butter
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cup flour
2 teaspoon baking powder
1 1/4 cup cornmeal
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cup milk
Thanks for reading!
