Bathbombs, Scratch, and Pie!

Math:
We did more lessons on CTC. I (Landen) am learning about telling time on a clock and measuring degrees in Celsius and Fahrenheit. I (Kaylee) am learning about measuring angles. I (Emberly) learned about stages of Time. I did puzzles on Mathseeds where I put pictures in order- a seed, a sprout, a flower, an apple, or an egg, a baby dinosaur, a teenage dinosaur, and an adult dinosaur.

Language Arts:
We continued reading our book, Front Desk, and did our copywork. This week's copywork was a letter from Mia (the main character) to a character named Lupe.

Science:
Spa Chemistry (Kaylee):
Landen and Owen have been asking for some blue bath bombs for their baths, so this week I finally made them some! I colored some of the mixture blue and put lemon essential oil in it. I colored the rest of the mixture red and put red cherry essential oil in it. They smelled so good!

Ok, so I have been having trouble getting my bath bombs to look right. When I made my rose bath bombs, the mixture wasn't sticking together in the molds and when I popped them out, they crumbled! So, I thought it was because the mixture was too dry. I added more water to it, but that activated the citric acid too much and the bath bombs sank so that they have a flat bottom. It wasn't working and when Emberly and I took a bath, the bath bomb fizzed for a couple minutes and then went flat. That was my big one, and it should fizz for more than that! This time, I was determined to make my bath bombs work.

I tried and tried to get the bath bombs to stick, but it just wasn't working. I was so frustrated! Eventually, I went to the professionals. I researched on Google "how to make bath bombs stick together" and it came up with this page. It said, "Do not overfill the molds. Just loosely overload them. Press both sides together with the maximum force possible (without breaking them, of course). Once you’ve closed it, press it for a few seconds, and gently knock the sides." This helped me with my red mixture, which was "too dry." In reality, I was just being too rough.

But even though I could make red bath bombs, my blue mixture still wasn't working. I researched more and found this page. It said, "This is usually a result of clumps in the dry ingredients or not fully mixing in the fragrance oil. We recommend sifting all your dry ingredients so they're nice and smooth. Then, add in your wet ingredients and mix with your hands for 1-2 minutes to ensure everything's incorporated fully." Finally, I can make bath bombs! I'm even a little jealous that the boys get to use my first nearly perfect bath bombs!

Elementary Science (Landen):
This week I watched some videos about volcanos. I learned about the Tonga Volcano, which erupted on Jan. 14, 2022. I also learned that when volcanos erupt, the lava turns into rock. I learned that if you put lava rock (basalt is one of the types of lava rock) into a very hot oven for a while, it turns into lava.

Technology:
Digital Photography (Kaylee):
This week I finished my video about lighting. Then I took pictures of my bath bombs and my culinary arts- up ahead!

Digital Art (Landen):
This week I did some more Scratch. First, I watched a tutorial Kaylee showed me about how to use a pen Scratch addition to write words. Then, I tried it. For some reason, it isn't working. My pen moves, but it won't write!!! I will be working more on it next week. You can find it here.

Elective:
Culinary Arts (Kaylee):
This week I made a pie with some premade pie crust and peaches we had in the fridge!

We warmed it up in the microwave and ate it with vanilla ice cream. It was delicious! Shiloh loved it, too!

I also made Jalapeno popper pasta for dinner. It was yum! We made half of it without peppers for those who don't like the heat.

P.E. (Landen):
The weather was still great so I went and played outside and ran around. Then I pretended I was a dinosaur.

Arts and Crafts (Emberly):
This week I made some more headbands. I learned how to make a bow.

  1. Well it's definitely been a long time since I wrote anything. But I want you to know that I have been reading the blog, just not writing anything. One thing, though, I can't get into the Scratch so you're gonna have to show me when I come see you, what's going on there.
Would you ever consider inviting Grandpa and me to one of your book parties?? They look like they are so much fun.
I've never had raspberries in green jello...sounds like a treat. We had some lemon pepper chicken wings the other day, because grandpa was reminded of how much he liked lemon pepper from your making lemon pepper chicken tenders, Kaylee. Yummy looking pasta, too! And pie!
I'm glad you could do research to figure out what was going on with your bat bombs. And that you figured out what to do to make them better.
I like the big smile on Emmi's face as she's using her frog scale! She's so cute! Do you wear the headbands, Emmi? They look really pretty. It's cool you made a bow.
Landen, I bet you're about ready to set off the volcano, right? I'm sure that will be interesting!
Kaylee, did you get the letter I mailed to you?
I like seeing the pictures you've taken, Kaylee...they add so much to your blog!
Looking forward to more of your blogging. I love all y'all!
    ❤, Grandma Susan
