April Crates and lots and lots of water

Science:
We know that our body is made of mostly water... around 60% actually. As we begin our new unit: Skin, Hair and Nails, we studied the different types of water we have available to us.

We stuck the strips in the water, and lay it out on a paper towel for 60 seconds. We can only compare the colors, and after a few minutes, the test becomes invalid. We tested several different types of water, such as kitchen tap water, bathroom tap water, bottled water, and the purified water from our water filter system.

All of our sources tested negative for iron, copper, mercury, chlorine, nitrite and nitrate. The only real differences were in pH, fluoride, and total alkalinity. The colors were slightly different in these, so slight that it was really open to interpretation to how different they were. It makes us question, though, why our expensive filtering system wasn't that different from the tap water and other waters. Is the system not as good as they say it is, or are the tests just invalid?
Tech:
We started our April Crates this week!

Doodle Crate (Kaylee): I am making woven landscapes.

This week I chose this ocean wave to weave. I can weave it and then frame it so that it can go into my room! I wove the yarn part of this wave. Next week, I will weave the "roving." Roving is what people make yarn out of!

Tinker Crate (Landen): I am building a Phantom Projector!

It will project things onto a wall, such as a magic hat on a table, and then it will project the ghost part onto the wall- such as a bunny popping out of a hat!

Elective:
Arts and Crafts (Kaylee):
This week I am trying to finish my slippers. I don't want to be stuck doing the slippers for the rest of the year!

Building Machines (Landen):

I built this car and a firetruck. The car carries a fire extinguisher and the ladder part of the firetruck can move up and down. There are stabilizers on the firetruck so that when the ladder moves, the truck doesn't tip over! My siblings and I had lots of fun playing with these!

  1. Good afternoon! Our bodies are 60% water, huh?! I thought it was more than that. Thanks for setting me straight! The water we have at our apartment tastes OK to me, but not to Grandpa. I hope our water tastes good at our new home!
Looks like another fun yarn project! That will be great to have it hang in your room, Kaylee!
Landen...that phantom project sounds very interesting! I hope it works good. Your Lego creations are so cool! I'm glad you and your siblings had fun playing with them!
I so enjoy reading about your school activities!
    Love,
    Grandma Susan
