Sensory Experiments and Setember Kiwi Crates Part:1

Science: Nervous System week 3: Taste and Smell

This week we read about how nerves transmit messages from our tongue and nasal passages to our brains.

Experiment: Taste
Our mom blindfolded us and put random pieces of food on a plate. She had us eat one and guess what it was. There were 10 different foods like part of a pancake, a chocolate chip, a grape, etc. It was so much fun!

Experiment: Smell Challenge
We also did a smell challenge where we used these cups and filled them with 3 different food items. While we were blindfolded we had to smell them and match them up to the other cup that had the same smell. I chose cheese crackers, cinnamon powder and raisins for Landen.

Landen with the smell test mom and I put together for him.

Landen matched them up! Hooray!!

Next, it was my turn! Landen put some mystery food items in the cups.

I smell what I think is something sour- but is it lemon or lime?

The big reveal!
Landen put cheese chips, apple cider powdered mix, and lime juice in the cups. I knew I smelled something sour! But it wasn't lemon, it was lime!

Tinker Crate, Building a Walking Robot, part 1:

Landen built the motor to his walking robot. It was fun! Next week he will finish it.

Doodle Crate, Build a Felt Succulent Garden, Part 1:

Here is my agave. It's spikey and it's petals get flattened easily, but it's cool!

I opened my Doodle crate this week. I read the instructions and learned about succulents. I had no idea a cactus is a succulent! I made a pretty felt agave, a sedum, two jade plants, and three echeveria. I made seven plants this week!

Putting chalk on the tips of jade plant #1.
Next week I will mold clay sculptures and add them to my garden!

Electives:

Building Simple Machines (Landen): Problem Solving Activity, Build a Popcorn cart. This week was really fun because I got to build a popcorn cart of my own design. The three rules were:

1) Build a Popcorn Cart.

2) Make a sign that can turn.

3) Build a mechanism that makes the sign turn when you turn a handle.

This is what I came up with:

As you can see, the cart can be pulled by Sam and Sally. I made a large sign that turns so people can find the popcorn cart.

I included tiny Lego pieces to represent popcorn!

Arts and Crafts (Kaylee):
This week I read some of the intro lessons in my sewing book and I went through the check list for my sewing kit.
