Aquarium Field Trip

Language Arts:
We continued reading Ancestor Approved.

Science:
This week we went on a field trip to the Loveland Living Aquarium. Tuesday was ZAP day and tickets were $2!!
Shiloh enjoyed looking at all of the fish.

Fishy fact: desert tortoises sometimes share their underground dens with insects, tarantulas, and even rattlesnakes!

We saw a couple of fish in one exhibit that were at least 1 yard long and about 6 inches wide! They were huge!

We also saw a couple of otters swim by.
They were bigger than we expected!

Fun Fact: when a frog swallows, it pulls it's eyes down into the roof of it's mouth. The eyes help slide the squishy food down their throat. Eww!

We also loved climbing on the killer whale slides near one exhibit!

A moon jellyfish!

Fun fact: jellyfish aren't fish- they are invertebrate! Also, most jellyfish live less than one year. My (Kaylee) favorite jellyfish is the box jellyfish, which is the Most Deadly animal in the world! It's sting can kill a human in under 2 minutes! It also ranked the Most Dangerous Animal in the 72 dangerous animals show.

We ate a snack at the aquarium cafeteria- chips and a fruit cup!

We also learned about how the aquarium workers grow the lettuce for the cafeteria salads and serve it just a few feet away from where if first grew!

Finally, we visited the shark exhibit. There were all sorts of fish, a turtle, a giant stingray, and a whole lot of sharks!

The exhibit was dome-shaped, so we could watch the sharks swim right over our heads!

The stingray was my (Kaylee) favorite part. We also enjoyed the touch pools. I touched a sleeping shark and an anemone and Landen touched a sea urchin and a starfish!

It was a very fun and educational day!

Technology:
Digital Photography (Kaylee):
I learned about photography clichΓ©s and how some people say, "no more photos of blurred water and babies and pets and messy faces and..." and so on. I also watched another video on Creative Live. It was a quiz about assessing a photograph. The teacher showed a photo and then asked what ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and lens type he used. Then he showed the brightness or darkness meter of the photo and asked the class what setting to change to bring the meter down to normal brightness.

(The pictures below are copied directly from Creative Live and are used for educational purposes only.)

Here, the aperture is f/11, the shutter speed is 125, and the ISO is 100. But the photo is way too dark.

In order to brighten it up, you change the shutter speed to 4.

Digital Art (Landen):
I watched a tutorial animation on scratch about how to draw a character on scratch and then I drew my own character. See it here. And here is Kaylee's drawing.

Elective:
Culinary Arts (Kaylee):
This month in Raddish is... Thanksgivings Twists. This week I made Turkey Burgers topped with cranberry mayo and crispy onions.

I used ground turkey and mixed in Worcestershire sauce, fresh sage, thyme, garlic and salt.

The tool that was included this month was a flipper to flip the patties. I cooked them on the stove, carefully timing them to insure they were cooked. I topped them with provolone cheese.

As you can see.. there is a bun, lettuce, crispy onions, provolone cheese, a turkey burger, some cranberry mayo (cranberry sauce and mayo whisked together) and the bottom bun!

P.E. (Landen):
I had my second game. We had a couple of boys missing which meant that we had more playing time. It was a lot of work! We lost at 20-14 We fought hard and tried our best!

This week we also got a basketball hoop! I am excited to practice a lot more for this upcoming week's game.

It was so fun to have the support of both my Grandmas and one of my Grandpas.

Arts and Crafts (Emberly):

We made a family gratitude tree and leaves. Whenever we think of something we are grateful for we write it down on a leaf.

Also, I made a rainbow-colored paper chain with Kaylee's help. She wrote gratitude prompts on each one. Every day, I rip a paper slip off the chain and read the prompt. Then I answer the question.

  1. Hi there! Well that is so awesome you went to the aquarium!!!
Having a basketball hoop will be great for practicing your shots. Do you play "horse" ever? Grandpa and I liked watching you play your game last Saturday, Landen. You played hard and did well.
Kaylee, so how did the turkey burger taste? It sounds like it would be delish! I like the taste of Worcestershire sauce.
You'll have to show me the scratch program sometime.
The photography class sure helps you learn many things, Kaylee. I really didn't know there is so much to know about a camera and taking photos.
I remember seeing your gratitude tree. It's always a good thing to remember our blessings and show gratitude.
Take care and we'll see you soon!

  2. Yes, in fact, we just played horse a couple days before I posted the aquarium post! The turkey burger was good. I even had leftovers. Scratch is so fun. It is basically my favorite website ever. I also like Word and Miwrite. Miwrite is a my tech high program I do for school. For Scratch, all you need to do is go to my profile (I'll give you the link) and then play some of the games I've made. To see all my hard work, just go to one of my games, and there's this little blue button that says, "see inside." Click on it and it will take you inside my project. Then you can see all my code. It's so fun! Coding is one of my hobbies, as is reading and writing. I am grateful for so many things. One is scratch, another is this blog, and most important, my family. I can't wait to see you on Thanksgiving! 'Bye!

  3. Here's the link to my profile! I hope you like my games! On my profile, you can see what I've been doing on Scratch and read a little bit about me and my featured project. My username is Ilovemermaids09. If you scroll down you can see my shared projects, my followers, who I'm following, and some other games that people have made that I've liked or favorited. You don't even have to be signed in to explore Scratch! But you do need to have an account in order to make projects. All I had to do to make my account was make a username, password, and share an email. In order to comment and share projects mom had to confirm the email Scratch sent to her phone. And then I could share! I have about 40 shared projects. Explore! Most of them are games and they are very fun! The rest are animations or drawings. Here's the link:
